One Year Bible, June 4
2 SAMUEL 22:21-23:23
FULFILLMENT OF THE DAVIDIC COVENANT: David was promised a Land (2 Sam 7:10); victory over his enemies (2 Sam 7:11); a ruling dynasty (2 Sam 7:11-16); "sure mercies" (resurrection (Acts 13:34; 2:30) (2 Sam 7:15); messianic seed (2 Sam 7:11-16); the Temple (2 Sam 7:13). 2 Samuel 22 shows that God fulfilled every promise He ever made to David.
"He that rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God." God restored David's house (what was left of it). The "MIGHTY MEN" are those who identified with both David's humiliation and his reign. (the Cross and the Throne)
"THE THREE MIGHTY MEN" Led by David's nephew, ABISHAI. David thirsted. The three men sacrificed their lives to get water for him. John 4:7-24; John 19:28 Jesus thirsted. I sacrifice in worship to give water to Jesus to satisfy His thirst for worshippers.
RESPONSE: This fills me with hope. I have a Covenant with God, too! It's called the "new covenant in My Blood" (Luke 22:20). And God has kept every promise He ever made to us.
(1) Salvation: forgiveness and remission of the penalty of sin, justification, regeneration, assurance, sanctification, adoption, glorification.
(2) I can be His instrument of Blessing.
(3) The Holy Spirit.
(3) Healing.
(4) Deliverance from sin, satan, the Flesh.
(5) Resurrection
(6) Eternal Life (Now and into eternity)
Write this down and be blessed every day of your life! What is MY obligation?
(1) Repentance
(2) Faith
(3) Obedience
ACTS 2:1-47
TONGUES OF FIRE: YES, they spoke in "other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." 1 Cor 13:1 refers to them as "tongues of men and of angels". So don't be surprised if you don't "recognize" the language! And YES, they were filled with "new wine"- which is why some people don't believe this portion of Scripture - they are still operating in an OLD WINESKIN. In EVERY instance of Acts, where people received the Holy Spirit, THEY SPOKE IN TONGUES! (Yes, I know that capitals refer to yelling.)
PETER'S PENTECOST SERMON: Just an observation: At least half of his sermon was OT quotes. In his sermon, Peter proved that Jesus resurrected from the dead in fulfillment of the Scriptures!
THE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH: It must have been interesting to form a new community with 3000 right off the bat! Can we list seven pillars of the church? (1) Teaching. (2) Sense of Community (Relationship is everything.) (3) Prayer, worship, communion. (4) Signs and wonders. (5) Stewardship of possessions. (6) Evangelism. (7) Serving the needy.
RESPONSE: "Remission" is "deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, release, as from bondage, imprisonment". Acts 2:38 says when we repent that we receive "remission". I no longer need to live in the past. AND I "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Such FREEDOM! No wonder they "received his word gladly". (They welcomed it to themselves.)
PSALM 122:1-9
THIRD STEP: Psalm 122: Knit Together with the Body of Christ. There is now a sense of belonging to something huge! We are accepted among the Brethren. "compact together" - "to unite, to join, to bind together, to be joined, to be coupled" - in community. "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the House of the Lord."
PROVERBS 16:19-20
It is ALWAYS better to be humble than to be proud, for the simple reason that "God opposes the proud." (resists, ranges Himself against) (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5)
A FEW BENEFITS OF WISDOM: You'll have a good reputation. However, if you "trust the Lord" you will ALSO be happy!
RESPONSE: All of us need a sense of belonging. The Church is meant to supply that to a certain degree. But remember, ultimately, the fact that you are CHOSEN by God is what make you accepted and included - NOT what some church member says.
